Pyroluria

Many children and especially adults with more extreme symptoms of Asperger Syndrome, also have pyroluria. Pyroluria is a genetic condition in which Vitamin B6 or pyrodoxine and zinc receptors are blocked. This results in symptoms such as anxiety, withdrawn behavior and depression. The depression in pyroluria is much more severe than general depression and is often diagnosed as bipolar disorder, borderline personality disorder or even schizophrenia or DID (dissociative identity disorder) more commonly known as multiple personality disorder.

How can you or your therapist tell the difference? There are two major ways. First, a deficiency of B6 also presents with physical complaints. If you have at least 5 of these symptoms, then you may have pyroluria.

Morning nausea - rarely eats breakfast

"Stitch" in side when running as child

Tendency toward anemia

Headaches

Poor dream recall alternating with nightmares

Arthritic pain in joints even as child

Tendency to eat little to no meat

Poor stamina

Acne

Pronounced stretch marks without having gained or lost a lot of weight

Second, there is often a family history of bipolar disorder or schizophrenia or mental health behavior that resembles these conditions. There may also be a suicide in the extended family.
