Autism Autism is a syndrome that initially manifests in the childhood with symptoms such as difficulty with social interaction, verbal and nonverbal communication, and/or rigid, often repetitive behavior and activities. We do not know the cause of autism, though there is some evidence that it has genetic components and, in some cases, may be affected by vaccinations. There is no specific cure for autism. It is best managed by an understanding on the part of the parents or caretakers that a multi-faceted approach will yield the best results. Naturopathic medicine offers a portion of this approach. Naturopaths can assist in the various tests and provide sources of nutrients that dont have fillers that may adversely affect the autistic person. Also, naturopaths can help provide natural alternatives to antibiotics in treating the many illnesses that children with autism are prone to. A third and extremely important way that some naturopathic physicians can benefit the autistic patient is with constitutional homeopathy. Constitutional homeopathy (treating the entire person rather than the particular symptoms) can also result in significant behavior improvement and in some cases, there may be a complete cessation of the autistic behavior. Some basic goals for treating people with autism are: 1) Do a 30-day trial of a gluten-free, casein-free diet. We find that a gluten-free, casein-free (GFCF) diet often balances the emotional extremes of the syndrome. 2) Work with an antifungal/probiotic protocol to decrease the fungi and yeast in the intestines while increasing the amount of favorable bacteria. A naturopathic or conventional doctor should monitor this, as there may be an initial harsh reaction called "die-off" to the treatment. 3) Build up the immune system which is frequently deficient in autistic children. This can be done herbally or with more sophisticated and costly procedures such as IVIG. |
